Rogue Xplorers Crater Lake

Jumping into Crater Lake

We have made an unanimous decision as a family to jump into Crater Lake every summer from here on out. Here is what you need to know if you’re wanting to take the plunge into the deepest lake in America.

First of all, anyone can do it. As long as you’re BRAVE ENOUGH and also not wearing a wet suit, mask, goggles, fins, scuba gear, or life jackets. You can check out the rules and regulations HERE

The trail to the water is called Cleetwood Cove Trail and even though it’s only a little over a mile down to the water – the trail drops 700 feet in elevation through a series of switchbacks. My kids are use to hiking, but we were all TIRED going back up. It took us a long time to get back up! Crater Lake compares the hike to climbing 65 flights of stairs.

Enjoying the views along the way and making pit stops to rest make for a long 1 mile hike – but definitely worth it. Even if you don’t get in the water, you can fish and take boat tours around the lake (check the site for availability).

Once you reach the bottom, you continue the trail past an area that you can wade into the water and onto a large rock jutting out over the lake.

The water is frigid… I would recommend trying to go on the warmest day of the summer! The best part of the trip was having our 6 year old daughter jump in and hear the cheers from below. Be prepared for walking all the way back up soaking wet!

Be sure to share your adventures if you make the trek down to Cleetwood Cove and tag us so we can see!
